Pitbulls are known for their strength and agility, while German Shepherds are known for loyalty and intelligence.

By crossbreeding a Pitbull with the German Shepherd, it is possible to have puppies that will grow into loving, loyal watch dogs that can leap tall buildings, or at least tall fences, in a single bound.

While Pitbulls have received their share of media attention for aggressive behavior, but the United Kennel Club notes that human aggression is not characteristic of American Pit Bull Terriers and even disqualifies them if they show any sign of it at all.

Appearance of German Shepherd Pitbull Mixes

Puppies that have a Pitbull and German Shepherd mix in them can take on a variety of colors and attributes. While the American Pit Bull Terrier has very short hair, German Shepherds have thick medium-length hair, meaning your puppy could be anywhere in between. These puppies should not have long hair.

Expect a medium-size dog when your puppy is fully grown. Male German Shepherds can grow to 26 inches tall, and females can be 24 inches high at the withers, or the highest point on the dog’s shoulders. The Pitbull side of your puppy’s heritage could make him a bit shorter than standard German Shepherd size.

Caring for Shepherd Pitbulls

Shepherd Pit mix dogs are very strong and agile, as both the parent breeds are well-muscled dogs. Some Pit Bulls have been known to leap over fences more than six feet high! Make sure you have an adequate fence around your yard and your dog’s kennel has a cover to protect him from the elements as well as keep him from escaping while you are away from home.

Devote plenty of time to playing with and exercising your German Shepherd Pitbull mix puppy. Make a personal bond with your puppy so you can notice any personality changes as she grows older, and give her a positive outlet for all of that terrier energy so she is less likely to turn destructive and take it out on your furniture!

Training Pitbull Shepherd Mixes

When a puppy has Pitbull mixed with German Shepherd parentage, training needs to take place at a young age. These dogs can have tremendous physical power, and they can easily overpower a weak owner who does not establish firm but gentle command of the Shepherd Pit mix dog. This can be especially true of male dogs, who will struggle for control as an alpha if their owners don’t firmly establish themselves as their leaders.

Enroll your puppy in dog training as soon as it is old enough so you can establish leadership and learn how to handle your Shepherd Pit mix, particularly if you are relatively new at owning dogs.

While novice dog owners need not apply when it comes to owning German Shepherd Pitbull mix puppies, this crossbreed can be a loyal, energetic watch dog for owners who can devote the time and energy to making sure the dog has what it needs to thrive.
