Comfort Retriever

The Goldendoodle, also known as a Comfort Retriever, is one of the most popular of all designer dog breeds today

With so many breeds to choose from, there are still concerns over how to find the right puppy. One of the biggest concerns is about health problems in pure bred dogs. The easiest thing to do is adopt a mix breed dog from your local rescue group. But thankfully, a few adventurous minded people thought to take matters into their own hands.

Information about the Goldendoodle

The Golden Retriever Poodle mix, or Goldendoodle, was bred as a family companion dog. People loved Golden Retrievers, but did not want a dog that shed so much. Poodles are not as popular as Golden Retrievers, however they share a lot of the same attributes such as intelligence and friendliness.

The other major factor in crossing two pure dog breeds is the fact that the genetic diversity creates a relatively healthy pet. You do not have to worry about all of the genetically inherited illnesses that plague one particular breed. Also, allergy sufferers now have another option for a pet that will shed less or produce less dander. Keep in mind that there are no guarantees that a Goldendoodle will be hypoallergenic or even disease free.

Although many breeders will claim that this new breed is hypoallergenic, medical professionals long said that there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. The best you can hope for is a puppy that has the best hair type for you.

Appearance and Characteristics of the Comfort Retriever

Golden Retriever Poodle Mix

Golden Retriever Poodle mix will typically have either a coat that resembles that of a Poodle (more curly) or that of Golden which result in a more wavy appearance

Golden Retriever Poodle mixes are a very new breed, and this means that there are no guarantees as to what your new puppy will look like. Like all cross bred dogs, each puppy is individual in looks and temperament. However, there are a few things to be sure of.

There are two main coat types, the wool coat which is like a Poodle’s, and the fleece or hair coat which is more like a Golden Retriever but with waves or curls. The rule of thumb is that the more curls, the less shedding there will be. Common coat colors include cream, apricot, gold, and red. In general a Goldendoodle will weigh between 45-50 pounds, with larger and smaller versions available.

Golden Retriever Poodle Health and Facts

Goldendoodles are very intelligent, trainable, friendly to other dogs, and love people. They can have medium to high energy and will require an active family. Also, like most large breed dogs, they are susceptible to hip dyplasia and eye disorders, so they should be screened yearly by your veterinarian for these conditions.

It is recommended that you feed a premium high quality dog food that is made for large breed dogs, as it may help to avoid some of the health problems.

This breed crossing is not regulated or accepted by any major kennel club, including AKC. Because of this, there is no way to find a reputable breeder that is upheld to a standard of ethical breeding practices so you’ll just have to be patient and diligent in your research.

The Goldendoodle, although not recognized a unique breed, is nevertheless loved because of its pleasant temperament and disposition

If you feel that the Golden Retriever Poodle mix is a match made in heaven for your family, try and talk to local dog trainers, dog professionals, and even Golden Retriever or Poodle breeders to find a reputable breeder in your area.

Avoid online or newspaper ads and breeders who have no knowledge of the two breeds, will not allow you to see parents, or the place the dogs are kept.

With some persistence, you should be able to locate the perfect Golden Retriever Poodle mix puppies for your family and once you bring it home, you’ll have a wonderful pet for years to come.
