History of the Shih Tzu Pom
The origin of the puppy now known as the Shih Tzu Pom began with two distinct breeds – the Shih Tzu and Pomeranian. The former originated in China, where its name means “lion dog,” and the latter in Germany, where it is often called a Zwergspiz, or “dwarf dog.”
Both dogs from the Shih Tzu and Pomeranian mix were favored by royalty in their respective countries. In China, the Ming Dynasty royal family used the lion dog as a house pet. In Germany, a red Pomeranian nabbed the affections of Queen Victoria.
The Pom Shih Tzu mixture seems logical since both dogs are miniature in stature. Both breeds exhibit highly protective behaviors towards their owners, although it is amusing to wonder how they imagine themselves carrying out their royal guardian duties.
The mixing of these two breeds has also given people an opportunity to get playful with dog-naming. Although not officially recognized, the name Shiranian or Pomshi is often used to refer to this specific mixed breed.
To emphasize the Pomeranian side, one may hear the term Shiranian puppies. Another variation of the same idea is the Shipom. Provided there are no professional terminologists present in the room, any of these terms should be fine to use.
Appearance of Pomeranian Shih Tzu Mix Puppies
Both of the originating breeds have a somewhat lion-like appearance, and the mixture of the two emphasizes this trait. The wafting fur explodes from their tiny facial features, bearing an uncanny resemblance to a mane.
The proud carriage of the Shih Pom puppies is bound to arouse mirth due to its miniature measurements.
It is possible to find a huge range of colors in this puppy population. All colors were permitted by the professional breeding associations, which provided a variety of Shih Tzu Poms from which to select the perfect guardian house-dog.
Health Issues of the Pomshi Dog
Although these puppies exhibit a friendly temperament and good-natured playfulness, they are at risk for some health problems. If the dog is suffering, a sign of health issues might be a noticeable decrease in playfulness and activity.
The respiration of the puppy should be carefully monitored, as both sides of the mix have been known to develop problems with respiratory actions. This might be due, in part, to the small size of their nose.
Problems with the hips or knees are also fairly common. Even if they develop some health problems, these spritely puppies live up to into their mid-teen years fairly frequently.
The intense bonding they feel with humans should be taken seriously. If separation occurs for extended lengths of time, they can become depressed, which can also exacerbate existing health conditions.
The Shih Tzu Pomeranian mix has a long history of being a house pet, on both sides of the breed, and will provide loving families with a trusted friend.
