History of the Dorkie Dog

Dachshunds may be tiny, but they have a rich history. Bred to dig badgers out of their burrows and fight with them, the breed first became popular in the United States in the early part of the twentieth century.

Yorkies also have a colorful past as working dogs. First bred in the city of Yorkshire, England, these little canines were used to control the rat population in clothing mills.

Popular Aspects of the Yorkie Dachshund Mix

Yorkies are very popular dogs in the United States, partially because they are excellent at adapting to their surroundings and they travel well. Dachshunds are also known for being highly adaptable dogs who do well in most environments.

The small size of both breeds and their mixed puppies makes the Dorkie dog an excellent choice for people living in apartments, condos and homes with small yards.

Appearance of Dorkie Puppies

When choosing a Dorkie, look at the hair on the sire and dam, as well as the coat the puppy currently has. Where the Yorkshire Terrier will have fine, silky hair that falls straight down around it, the dachshund breed has several different hair lengths.

A Doxie coat can be short and sleek or long. Wire-haired breeds have a coarse texture and long-haired dogs do not always have straight hair, it can also be curly or wavy.

Expect a Dorkie puppy to be any combination of colors, including patterns such as brindles and dapples.

Expected Size of Dorkies

There are two different sizes of Dachshunds recognized by the AKC. The standard will be up to eleven inches in height and weigh-in between sixteen and thirty-two pounds. A miniature will not usually exceed seven inches in height and will weigh in at about ten pounds or less.

Yorkies are also on the small size, comparable to the miniature Dachshund. They are usually between six and seven inches tall with a weight of seven pounds or less.

The compatible size makes the breeds good choices for cross-breeding; however, there is a wide range in body length. While the Yorkie is well proportioned and compact, the Dachshund is known for a body that is long, lean and heavily muscled.

Temperament of Dachshund Yorkie Mixes

You can expect that your playful puppy will grow into a playful dog, highly affectionate with their humans and willing to defend. Unaware of their small size, both breeds can become aggressive with other dogs and strange people.

Both breeds and their Dachshund Yorkie mix puppies are prone to small dog syndrome. This isn’t a condition that arrives at birth. It’s a result of people treating the Dorkie puppies like babies.

Children and Dorkies

Bringing a Yorkie and Dachshund mix into any home with young children should be done with great care. The children should be trained in how to treat the dog properly and the family members should know how to be the pack leader and maintain an environment where the dog knows he is not the pack leader.

Daily walks will help you keep your mixed-breed dog happy and healthy and regular grooming will be required with the longer coats. You can expect your Yorkie Dachshund mix to live between twelve and fifteen years and make an excellent addition to any household.
